The Sullivan Center for Children opened in 1989 in a rented office building on Shaw Avenue near Palm Avenue. Kathy Sullivan, Ph.D and our Office Manager Diana Miller were the first employees. Dr. Rabens arrived shortly after and Dr.’s Barnes and Napolitano joined the staff in 1991. Dr. Berggren came to the Center as a Pre-doctoral Intern in 1996. Our psychiatrist, Dr. Fox joined our team in 2001.
The Sullivan Center moved to our 5000 square foot building in the Shaw Westgate Center in March 1996. We have grown beyond our current building and we have purchased a second building for an expanded Sullivan Center. Our new building opened in January 2005 and it features 10 more offices, another waiting room, a conference room, and a playroom with a one way mirror.
The Sullivan Center is a teaching institution and we usually have two or more doctoral/graduate students on staff and several pre-doctoral psychological assistants. We are also providers of Continuing Education for Psychologists, Social Workers and Marriage Family Therapists. Our new building will enhance our ability to provide services to children and families now, while training the child therapists of tomorrow.
"It is not unusual for our client’s families to
have a picnic on the grounds before or after a session." |
Our Center is located in the South entrance of the Shaw Westgate Center. We are situated in a park like atmosphere with acres of grass and trees. It is not unusual for our client’s families to have a picnic on the grounds before or after a session. During your visit you will likely see “Psyche,” the Sullivan Center cat running around outside or meandering around the offices.
Our facility is child centered, as you will see immediately when you enter our waiting room. On a busy day, you will see children enthusiastically playing on the slide. Our offices have sand trays, dollhouses, toys and games for play therapy and building rapport. Kids usually breathe a notable sigh of relief when greeted by their Doctor or escorted into an office. You will notice that our Clinical Staff are casual, youthful and friendly. This is all part of the natural climate of a child centered environment. Welcome.
